A door handle generally refers to any fixed or lever-operated door latch device, while the term door knob tends to refer to round operating mechanisms. Architect Aman Gandhi lists different types of door hardware.

Handle sets: These are ideal for front entries and essential for security and aesthetic purpose.
Door levers: Available in classic and contemporary look, door levers are available in different kind of finishes, patterns that can match your home decor.
Dead bolts and door knobs: These are available with locking system and a key insertion slot. For door handle purpose, bolts and knobs are available without the locking system.
Touch panel or electronic locks: Locks with touch panels or electronic system saves you the hassle of keys. This has a backup key as well. All you have to do is enter your home with a personalized access code and lock your door with the touch of a button.
Residential door locks, lever and knobs: Due to easy availability, sizes, finishes and affordability, these are used for high-end residences or apartments.
