Diwali, one of the most celebrated festivals in India is associated with prosperity, wealth and happiness. It brings with it endless festivities, reunions, entertainment and, for most of us, a promise of a happier life. Lighting and decorating the house on this festival is considered auspicious. Vastu and feng shui consultant Rashi Gaur lists simple tips to bring prosperity to your house this Diwali.

  1. Start by cleaning every nook and corner of the house. This ensures that the stagnant energies are revitalized. Decorations attract prosperity. Donate stuff that you don’t use anymore. This way you make way for new things in your life.
  2. Pooja ceremony is conducted to seek blessings of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. While praying, ensure that the idols are placed in such a way that you are facing the North East zone because this zone denotes meditation and a calm mind, and ensures that only pure thoughts are put out as wishes to the Lord and the Goddess.
  3. Swastik, another symbol associated with the pooja, is a very auspicious symbol to display outside the house. Draw it on either side of the door at a height of 2/3rd from the floor. This will protect your house and ensure that only positive energies enter your house.
  4. Do not place an idol of Lord Ganesha outside or at the entrance because by doing so you are giving the Lord a status of a guard. So always place it is in the temple of your house and never outside.
  5. While making rangoli, incorporate auspicious symbols such as peacock and swastik. Another way to bring prosperity through rangoli designs is to first figure out which zone of the house you are making it in. Incorporate patterns such as triangles in the South zone; straight lines in the East and South East zones; broader patterns and rectangular designs in the South West, centre and North East; wavy patterns in the North zone; and circular designs in the North West and West zones to attract the positive energies of that zone.
  6. Fresh flower decorations bring in a fresh breath of positive energy into the house. Flower garlands on the main door are a great way to attract auspicious energies into the house. But do remember to remove them the moment they start to wilt or else the prosperous energy wouldn’t take long to turn sides.
  7. Lighting up the house brightens the whole place. It’s a great way to attract good tidings into the house. Lighting diyas on the entryway lights up the path and makes way for good energy to walk right in.
  8. These days we all have a huge selection of lights to choose from. These are available in various designs and colours. So choose rightly. See the zone you want to put up these lights in and then decide on the colour. White can be used anywhere. While red or green twinkling lights in the South zone attract more recognition, a balcony in the North can have blue fairy lights. White and yellow colours can be used in the North West, West, South West and North East zones. Go for green in the South East and East zones. The twinkling lights are a great way to attract prosperity. Make sure that you replace fused bulbs immediately to stay away from negative energy.
  9. Look for any leaking taps and faucets and get them fixed immediately because leaking taps and lights that don’t work drain the wealth from your house.
