Electric kettles are a boon when it comes to almost-instant hot water for a cuppa. Though cleaning the kettle is not a tough task, it has to be undertaken correctly. Ramesh Chembath, Business Head – Kitchen Appliances, Usha International, gives us simple tips on how to care for this essential product.

1. As this is an electrical appliance, always unplug the base, allow the kettle to cool down and remove the remaining water from the kettle completely before it is cleaned to avoid any electric shock.

2. The inner part of the kettle can be washed with soap water. Then rinse it thoroughly. The product should not be immersed in water or any other liquid to avoid accidents. Never use the dishwasher to clean the kettle.

3. Use a sponge or damp cloth to clean the outer area of the kettle. Abrasive soaps, scouring pads or cleansers should be avoided completely.

To avoid damage by steam, face the spout away from walls and furniture.

4. To prevent accidental tipping, operate the kettle on a flat surface.

5. To avoid any kind of steam damage, keep the spout facing away from walls or cabinets during use.

Make sure the appliance is switched off and unplugged before undertaking any maintenance activity.

6. Supervision by adults is important if the product is being used by children. It is better to keep it away from children as far as possible.

7. You may notice the kettle heating up but not boiling. This occurs due to a build-up of mineral deposits over time. In order to descale, you can use lime/scale remover or get in touch with the manufacturer.
