Niches are a shallow recess in a wall or wooden panelling. Niches make your spaces attractive and at times work perfectly as a focal point of any particular room or area. Architect Aman Gandhi tells you how to use this element to great effect.

  1. Niches can be made in different shapes and sizes like square, rectangular, circular with flat base, semicircular, arched, ornamental edges or a mixture of any of these.
  2. The insets in wall, stone, tile or wood in bedroom, bathroom or living room can also be used as extra storage space to keep your stuff neatly. Niches also serve as functional and aesthetic purposes.
  3. You can treat niches with wallpaper, texture paint, etc, to enhance your decor. Use it to keep small paintings, art piece, picture frames, vases, candles, statues, sculptures, etc.
  4. Niches can be illuminated with warm white, day light, pure white or in the form of spot or diffuse light. The fixture for niches can be concealed or surface mounted or LED strip light. This depends on the way you want to highlight an article in it.
  5. The rhythm, pattern or symmetry of a niche depends on its size and shape. These can be made in straight line with same sizes.
  6. Another way to use niches is create several of the same size, but alternate the decorative patterns used within.
