Sinks are available in different materials. Vishal Raman, Head of Sales, Franke Faber India, lists out features of each one to help you choose the right sink.

1Stainless steel:

This is the most common type of sink that can be cleaned easily. It is less expensive and available in a wide range. Although stainless steel is a thinner gauge material, installing such sinks below the counter is not recommended. Hence it is better to install at least 20-mm gauge sink. However, 18-mm gauge sink is considered the best. The lower the gauge the stronger it is. Most of the stainless steel sinks are self-rimming. They are edge finished as well so that you can mount it on the counter. They can be installed at a place where the counter has a clip fixed. The market today also has under counter mounts.

2Cast iron:

The porcelain coated cast iron sinks are portable, deeper and give a rich look. They can be fixed anywhere in the kitchen and are very durable. These sinks are a bit heavy and are available in various colours, are stylish and have self-rim as well. As cast iron is a heavy material, it can be fixed using a special kind of material only.

3Enamelled steel:

Sinks with enamel coating on their steel base are called enamelled steel sinks. Although they are costly, they are thin, noisy and lower end sinks. Higher-end enamel sinks have a better coating which increases their durability. Most of this type are designed for above the sink mounting, which can be self-rimming and have separate installation rim as well.

4Solid surface:

These sinks are durable, attractive and easy to clean. If the kitchen has a fabricated platform, you can install a sink matching the surface or a contrast one. It looks stylish and clean after being fixed.

5Composites:

This new variety has acrylic and quartz mixed in the material, hence they are called composites. Available in a variety of colours, chips and nicks are the most unique feature of these sinks. They can be fixed above or below the platform, but are also available in standard configuration, sizes and shapes.

6Quartz:

With features like scratchproof, stain proof, rustproof, noise proof, unbreakable after installation, colour options and easy installation, quartz is also one of the options to consider.
