Summer brings with it abundance of sunlight and refreshes the atmosphere around. Garden enthusiast Sumithra Srikant, founder, Aapti Gardening Solutions, gives easy and useful ways to care for your garden this summer season.

  1. Mulching is a very important factor that helps you to care for your plants in the garden during summer season. Mulching is a process where you put dry leaves on the top soil. This ensures that water does not get evaporated faster.
  2. Water is another essential aspect that you should keep in mind during this season. All plants do not need too much water. When you pour one glass of water and see excess water draining out, the next time you water the plant, use 3/4 th water after 3 – 4 days. Moist soil and not wet soil is the requirement for plants. Excess water not only washes away the nutrients but also rotten the roots of the plant, killing it eventually.
  3. Gardening is also about monitoring. Therefore you need to keep a check on plants for pests. Look at the bottom of the leaves for pests. An organic or homemade solution to take care of pests is to use 20 grams of ginger, garlic and green chilli, grind these and filter it. Then sieve it and keep it in 100ml of any oil for 15 days. To separate oil from water, add soap solution to ¼ teaspoon of solution (soap nut powder in half glass of water). Shake it well and your pest control solution is ready to use.
  4. Few veggies like ladies finger, gourds and pumpkins grow during the summer season. The ideal time to grow other vegetables is after June 15.
  5. Plants do not need lot of shade or too much sheath during the summer season. You can expose soil to sun to dry and mix manure to ready it for the coming season. This is called the process of solarization.
