Children spend a lot of time in their bedroom for sleeping, studying and playing purpose. Therefore their room should be a reflection of their personalities. Children’s bedrooms need to be stylish, practical, fun, cosy and safe. Shami Goregaoker, Project Manager and design strategist, GA design puts forth factors to be kept in mind before you shortlist furniture for your child.

  1. Age, colour and themes are very important factors to be considered for children's furniture. As a general perception, colours like pinks and reds are associated with girls whereas colours like blue, green or even black are associated with boys, but current trends thankfully are veering away from this rule. Keep the likes of the kid in mind before you finalize your purchase.
  2. The layout of the room is vital as it determines the movement within it. If the room is small but has to accommodate two children, you can opt for fun looking bunk beds to save on floor space. The study area has to be equally interesting with arrangements made for two. The basic design should be neat and uncluttered yet fun and inspiring with a colour palette that is appropriate for both children.
  3. For a single occupant however, you can go the extra mile and provide an unrestrained colour scheme with furniture that could range from vintage and sophisticated to modern and chic.
  4. You could either opt for matching furniture sets of a particular theme or follow the assorted design option which includes interesting pieces that add up to a quirky collection. While purchasing storage pieces like wardrobes and chest of drawers, it is very important to think of the ever-growing needs of children. The best tip is to maximize storage options and keep things simple and gender neutral as children change their minds and get bored of things quite easily.
