Diwali festival is all about decorations, lights, gifts, sweets, worship, prayers and wishes. Cleanliness and proper lighting has been given a lot of importance in the worshipping process, be it Diwali or house warming in vastu. This includes repainting the house, keeping it clean and decorating it to give it a new look, lighting diyas, using antiques and various decorative items to beautify the house, thereby bringing prosperity, peace, happiness, and progress in your life. Expert SK Mehta gives simple tips to make your Diwali more divine.

  1. Laxmi poojan should always be done facing North or East direction. If this isn’t possible, you can worship in the West direction as well, but ensure that you are facing north or east only.
  2. Always keep the mud idols of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha while you worship along with Shree Yantra and Kuber Yantra becauseit is considered to be lucky.
  3. Decorating the front area of the house, be it the main gate or the area at the entrance, with maandanaas and rangolis helps in keeping Goddess Laxmi happy. The maandanaas can have buds and flowers, which are created with lime stone mix, but paint shouldn't be used. The main gate should also have a swastika at both the ends and Shubha Labha should be written there.
  4. For houses and shops facing East, use yellow coloured decorative lights only. If you want to use blue light, make sure it's less luminous. Houses facing South should have more red lights than green and blue. Use blue and white and less of red colour lights if your house faces West. Houses facing North should have more green and white lights and less of red.
  5. Don't burst crackers in the North East zone of the house. Any lighting, red coloured bulbs, generator, invertor or any kind of heat-generating product is considered harmful for mental peace, accidents and may cause fire hazards.
  6. Since crackers are related to fire, the best place to burst crackers is the South East zone. North West is also considered good for crackers. However, do not use South West to burst crackers thatgo on for a long time.
  7. Broken furniture, non-working electronics, old clothes, waste papers, etc, should be removed before the festival, as such items are considered to increase the mishaps caused by Raahu, Shani and Ketu and cause increase in negative energy, which leads to mental disturbance, obstacles and loss in work-related activities.
  8. Keep vehicles such as car, scooter, etc, clean at all times to evade negative energy.
  9. Always make sure that the North zone of the house is free of any vastu doshas because this area is considered the residence of Lord Kuber. Any kind of vastu dosha in this area would cause loss in revenue. For prosperity, the North area for worship should be open, spacious and can have a water tank, garden or a main gate. Keeping a bowl full of water for birds on the terrace and an aquarium in the living room in the North direction is also considered lucky.
  10. Flowing water has always been considered lucky according to vastu. In the North East zone, an artificial flowing waterfall can help in this case.
  11. Gifting sweets and items to friends and family members on festivals is also considered lucky. However, do not gift  crackers, material made of black leather, knife or any other kind of weapon because this may hamper your relation and health as well.
  12. Donating clothes to poor little girls helps in infow of money.
  13. Feeding a cat on Diwali brings happiness.
  14. Diyas should be lit up at the place of pooja for the entire night. It can also be lit at the porch of the house. If your house or nearby area has a Peepal or Bel Patra tee, light a diya here. You can also light a diya in any temple near your house. The front door can also be lit up with diyas apart from the plinth of your house.
